The district decided to use its own arms in 1948. Initially the design showed the local Elstertal bridge, but the image was too natural and not heraldically correct. Finally the above arms were adopted, which showed the lion of the city of Plauen and symbols of the locally important textile industries. The arms were abolished in 1952.
