The arms are those of the Lords of Hünenberg, who ruled the village of Obermettmenstetten from 1346-1398. The village adopted the arms as village arms in the 16th century (the family was already extinct by that time).

The family arms are known from seals of Gottfried von Hünenberg from 1385-1309. See also [[Hünenberg (Zug)|Hünenberg]].

The oldest known use of the arms by the village dates from 1521 when they appeared on a wooden decoration for the local church (although it has been speculated that the arms were added later).

The arms have officially been adopted by the municipality on December 18, 1928.
