===Origin/meaning===
===Origin/meaning===
The arms are those of the former Amt Schöppingen.
Schöppingen was already mentioned as a town in the 14th century. The sheep already appears on the oldest known seal of the town, dating from the 16th century. The meaning of the sheep is not clear. It has been explained as a canting symbol, from Schöp, sheep in the local dialect (Schaf in German). The sheep has since been used as symbol and arms of the municipality, although the colours have differed widely during the centuries.
