The chief shows the Holy Spirit (dove) in the Marian colours (blue and silver) and two crescents. The crescent is also a symbol for St. Mary and symbolises here the St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore where the bishop studied. | |||
The lion is taken from the McDonald clan in Scotland as a 'canting' symbol (but these are not the family arms of the bishop). The hand with the saltire symbolises St. Andrew, the patron saint of the bishop. | |||
