As Auxiliary bishop he used a smaller shield placed on the diocesan arms of Münster. The black cross is taken from the arms of the city of [[Marl (Recklinghausen)|Marl]] where he was born. The tree 'over the river' is a canting element (Over=across/over, beck means stream). The shell is a symbol of pilgrimage and was also part of the arms of Pope [[Benedict XVI]], who appointed him as auxiliary bishop.

As bishop of Essen the canting part of the personal arms is quartered with the diocesan arms.
