Erpel belonged to the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]] and the oldest seal dates from the late 13th century. This seal, and all later seals until the 17th century, show the patron saint of Köln, St. Peter, with two crossed keys, his symbol. In the 18th century the three crowns, the symbol of Trinity and also part of the arms of the city of [[Köln]], replaced St. Peter on the seals. The last seal, dating form the early 19th century, only shows the cross of the State of Köln.
