The city was founded by Knight Hermann von Spegel between 1290 and 1294. The oldest surviving seal, however, dates from 1393. It already showed a city wall and three towers, surrounded by roses. The lion in the gate is the lion of Hessen and has been in use since the late 19<sup>th</sup> century. Previous images showed a blue lion in a red field or a golden lion in a red field. As these lions are of uncertain origin, the lion of Hessen was used instead.
