Even though Nastätten was already an important village in the 9<sup>th</sup> century, and a town in the 12<sup>th</sup> century, it never developed into a city. City rights were granted only in 1817. The oldest seal of the town dates from the 16<sup>th</sup> century and shows the striped lion of Hessen, as the town was at the time a possession of the Counts of Hessen-Darmstadt.
