The nail in the arms (Nagel) is obviously a canting element. The name Nagel os of Slavic origin and means marshy soil, which is symbolised by the reed in the left half of the shield. The pine tree (Fichte) and the mountains in the base are canting for the Fichtelgebirge region in which the municipality is situated. The silver and black colours refer to the Counts of Brandenburg-Ansbach, who ruled part of the municipality from 1536-1810. The silver and blue colours refer to Bayern, as from 1536-1810 the other half of the municipality was ruled by Bayern and since 1810 the whole municipality is part of Bayern.
