The insignia was redesignated for the 156th Artillery Regiment on 30 March 1962. It was redesignated for the 156th Field Artillery Regiment on 19 July 1972.  It was amended to revise the symbolism on 16 October 1980. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 156th Field Artillery Regiment on 23 April 1936.  It was redesignated for the 156th Field Artillery Battalion on 6 August 1942.  It was redesignated for the 156th Armored Field Artillery Battalion on 30 June 1955.  The insignia was redesignated for the 156th Artillery Regiment on 30 March 1962.  It was amended to add a motto on 30 August 1968.  It was redesignated for the 156th Field Artillery Regiment on 19 July 1972.  The insignia was amended to revise the symbolism on 16 October 1980.
