The arms were granted in 1633 by Emperor Ferdinand II at the same time as the city rights. The arms show a city wall and the image of St. Mary, the patron saint of the city, with Jesus on a crescent. It is also the arms of the  Carthusian monastic order in 1626. The Carthusians were granted the local castle in 1627 by Albrecht von Waldstein (Albrecht z Valdštejna). On the city wall the letters FPBP mean Fecit Philipphus Buschek Prior. This probably means that the prior of the order started the fortifications, but this is not certain.
