The horizontal division of the shield symbolises the name of the municipality, Börm is derived from Barm, meaning higher ground or small hill. The municipality is combined of two former municipalities, Börm and Neubörm, which is symbolised by the vertical division. The alternating colours symbolise the nature (green) and sands (gold) in the area. The house in the upper half is a typical house for the people who settled in the marshy areas in the middle of the 18th century. The spades in the lower half symbolise the closing and reclaiming of the Barmer Lake, now known as the Barmer Koog.
