The arms are a combination of the lion of the Dukes of Jülich (Gulik) and St. Martin, the parish saint. In the 14th century the estate of Tegelen became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich, to which it belongs until 1793. The local church is, according to legend, founded in 720. The parish saint was St. Martin. Until 999 the church belonged to the diocese of Köln, later to Liège.The oldest seals date from the 16th century and all show St. Martin. The lion never appeared on the seals, but was added in 1896.
