The small cross in the middle of the arms represents the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]], to which the city belonged. The chain around the cross represents the four former municipalities that are now tightly bound together.  
The old arms show three wheat ears, as a symbol for the importance of breweries in the local economical development. The wheel in the lower half is the symbol of the local patron saint, St. Catherine.
