Redesignated 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron, and activated, on 13 April 1962. Organized on 8 July 1962. Redesignated 421st Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991. Combat in Southwest and Western Pacific, 29 February 1944-14 August 1945. Not manned, 8 July 1962-5 March 1963, 25 April 1967-16 April 1969, and 13 December 1975-1 December 1976. Combat in Southeast Asia, c. 28 November 1965-24 April 1967 and 27 June 1969-15 August 1973. Combat air cover for the evacuations of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Saigon, Vietnam, April 1975. Air cover during the recovery of the SS Mayaguez and its crew, May 1975. Combat in Southwest Asia, January-February 1991.
