The arms were granted on June 26, 1978.

These arms show the patron saint, St. John Evangelist, as shown in the Arnsberg Roll of Arms, dating from the 16<sup>th</sup> century. The municipality also used this composition as unofficial arms from the 19<sup>th</sup> century until 1956, see below.  
The old arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known from 1530. The arms show St. John Evangelist, holding a shield with a crescent, his symbol. The colours are the colours of the County Arnsberg, to which the city historically belonged.
