The village became in the 13<sup>th</sup> century a possession of the Earl of Sanvitale. They ruled the village until 1612. In the early 19<sup>th</sup> century the village became the popular holiday spot of Maria Luigia de Borbone (Bourbon), Duchess of Parma. Her successors of the Bourbon-Parma family made the village the seat of the ducal (summer) court. | |||
The arms were granted in 1860 and combine the arms of the earls of Sanvitale (red bend) with the fleur-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty. | |||
