The deer was wearing a collar with the small shield of the Lords of Berthout. They were known as Lords of Turnhout from the early 12<sup>th</sup> century until 1347. The deer and dog may symbolise the fact that the area was used by the Dukes of Brabant as a hunting area. On the 17<sup>th</sup> century seal of the city only the deer was shown, the dog was removed. This composition was granted as arms in 1819. | |||
