The burgh never recorded arms, but used a seal as shown below.

The seal illustrates the legend of the town's patron saint, St. Gerardine, who is said to have walked along the shore at nights bearing a lantern to warn ships off the dangerous rocks; today the promontory by the harbour is still called Halliman (Holy Man) Point and the rocks to the West, Halliman Skerries. The seal bears the motto "Per noctem lux".
