Burg was one of the major cities of the counts of Berg, who granted certain freedom rights in 1436, but Burg did not become a city until 1825. The lion in the arms is the lion of Berg. The arms are based on a 16<sup>th</sup> century seal. The original seal is known from 1556 and shows in the upper half the lion, and in the lower a fish. The seal was still used in 1607, but later in the 17<sup>th</sup> century the fish was replaced by the wheel. The wheel represents the old water mill in the Wupper. The colours of the lower part were in the 19<sup>th</sup> century black on gold (see below), but were changed in the 1960s.
