The arms were granted in 1906 and confirmed in 1935. The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which is known since 1269. The arms show a city view and show in the front the figure of St. Peter, the patron saint of the city, with the brothers Otto and Walram of Nassau. The city was a possession of the Counts of Nassau, who had also granted the city rights in 1251. Later seals show either the lion of Nassau alone, or combined with St. Peter. When the city applied for the arms, it was decided to use the composition of the oldest seal.
