Even though Bardejov was a city in the 13th and 14<sup>th</sup> century, the city did not use arms. The seal showed St. Aegidius, the patron saint of the city. The arms appear in the 15<sup>th</sup> century and were officially granted in 1453 by King Ladeslav V. Being a border city, the arms symbolise the importance as a fortress. The large arms of the city often show an angel as supporter, see below.
