The cross is the old arms of the State and diocese of Paderborn. It first appears on the seals of the city in 1310, before that only the local cathedral was shown on the seals. The complete arms first appear on coins from the early 15th century. The origin of the lower part is not known, but it may be derived form the older city banner. It may be added to distinguish the arms of the city from those of the state. During the centuries the number of pales in the lower part differed widely. The present number was set in 1931 when the arms were officially granted.
