Gladbeck received city rights in 1919 and its arms were officially granted in 1929. The city grew rapidly in the late 19<sup>th</sup> century, due to coal mining, which is symbolised by the miner's tools in the right half of the arms. The left half shows the three wolf-hooks, derived from the arms of the Lords of Brabeck (see also [[Hemer]]), who lived for many centuries on the Wittring castle near the village.
