The arms were first mentioned and were granted at the same time as the city rights in 1562. The arms show in the gate the canting arms of the Counts of [[Henneberg]] (hen's mountain). The city was for many centuries part of the County of Henneberg. The gate itself symbolised the new city character of Kaltennordheim.
