Skuodas received city rights on May 17 1572 from Joannes Chodkiewics, who at the time ruled the city, and was renames Johanesberg after himself. The old name was still used, however. The use of the head of St. John Baptist on a platter probably dates from 1572, but was first mentioned in 1645. St. John is the patron saint of the city as well as from Joannes Chodkiewics.
