The village was historically a longtime possession of the Abbey of Sainte-Gertrude of Nivelles. Hence the name and the image of St. Gertrude of Nivelles in the arms. The other half of the arms show the arms of the Bouvet family, lords of the village. The local castle was built in the 17th century by Lord Gilles Bouvet (ennobled 1698, died 1623).
