Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 19, 1950.

The arms show in the upper part the wheel of the State of Mainz, and in the lower part the arms of the Lords of Eppstein. Most of the district was owned and ruled by the Counts of Eppstein until 1535. Gradually the area was acquired by the Bishops of Mainz, who finally ruled the whole area in 1581.
