Official blazon
- (1818) Van blaauw, beladen met een klimmende leeuw, houdende in de voorste regterpoot een dubbelde arend, alles van goud.
- (1841) Een gulden schild, met eenen zwarten leeuw, houdende met den regten klaeuw eenen tweehoofdigen arend met uytgestrekte vleugels, ook van goud.
- (1985) Gevierendeeld 1. en 4. in goud een leeuw van sabel, houdend in de rechtervoorpoot een dubbele adelaar van hetzelfde 2. en 3. in zilver een kruis van keel, het hart beladen met een streepschild van goud.
Origin/meaning
The arms were first granted on July 15, 1818, in different colours on April 12, 1841 and new arms were granted on June 3, 1985.
The new arms combine the historical arms with the cross of Boekhoute.
The historical coat of arms of Assenede is identical to the old coat of arms of the former "Ambacht" ("officium") of Assenede, a conglomarate of villages of which it was the capital. In medieval times the "Asseneder Ambacht" stretched from Kluizen (B) to Terneuzen (NL). Together with the "Ambachten" of Boekhoute (Assenede, B), Axel (NL) and Hulst (NL), it formed the so-called "Vier Ambachten" region.
The coat of arms combines the coat of arms of the county of Vlaanderen (a black lion on a golden field) and the Imperial eagle. This is because ecclesiastically Asseneder Ambacht belonged to the diocese of Utrecht (part of the German Empire at the time), while as the County of Vlaanderen was largely part of France.

Initially the arms were granted in the Dutch national colours, as in 1813 the mayor applied without indicating the colours. The arms were thus granted in the national colours. When the arms were confirmed after the Belgian independence, the colours were corrected.
The coat of arms of the Asseneder Ambacht is also incorporated in the coat of arms of Ertvelde and Zelzate.
