Origin/meaning

The green tree symbolises the natural reserve of the Brelinger Berge in the municipality. The oak tree symbolises the former dense oak forests and the present forests. Wede means wood and thus the tree is also a canting symbol. The sixteen leaves represent the 16 villages in the municipality, the three acorns the three former 'Samtgemeinden' Bissendorf, Mellendorf and Elze.

The blue lion is taken from the arms of the Principality of Lüneburg, the wolf-iron in the base is taken from the arms of the former Burgdorf district, to which the villages belonged until 1974.
