6TH CAVALRY REGIMENT, US ARMY

History: Constituted 5 May 1861 as 3rd Cavalry. Oregnized 18 June 1861 at Pittsburgh, Pa. Redesignated 3 August 1861 as 6th Cavalry. Mechanized 21 July 1942.

Shield : Azure, a unicorn rampant or.
Crest : On a wreath of the colors an imperial Chinese dragon rampant or lined azure, grasping in its dexter
claw four arrows sable, armed and feathered gules.
Motto : Ducit Amor Patriae (Led by Love of Country)

Origin/meaning

The Unicorn symbolizes knightly virtues and fighting aggresiveness. The Blue Colour indicated the Colour of the Federal Uniforms during The Civil War. The Chinese Dragon symbolises the Regiment's entrance into the Forbidden City in Peking in 1900. Participation in the Indian Wars is symbolized by the Bundle of Arrows.
