History:Constituted 5 May 1861 as 3rd Cavalry. Organized 18 June 1861 at Pittsburgh, Pa. Redesignated 3 August 1861 as 6th Cavalry. Mechanized 21 July 1942.

Origin/meaning
The Unicorn symbolizes knightly virtues and fighting aggresiveness. The Blue Colour indicated the Colour of the Federal Uniforms during The Civil War. The Chinese Dragon symbolises the Regiment's entrance into the Forbidden City in Peking in 1900. Participation in the Indian Wars is symbolized by the Bundle of Arrows.
