Origin/meaning
In 1561 King Ferdinand I elevated the community to the status of a townlet. The coat-of-arms bestowed on it on this occasion represents a divided shield with a half of white eagle in the right section and a lynx in the left section; the town's coat-of-arm is a part of the family coat-of-arms of the Zďd'arskýs of Zďar, local lords at that time. In 1870 Emperor Frances Joseph promoted the townlet to the status of a town and, finally, in 1898 it was upgraded to a royal mining town.
