History: The Name has been used by a Destroyer in service 1941-1956, a Frigate in service 1967-1987, an a Frigate in service 1994-2009 (sold to Portugal as Dom Francisco de Almeida).

Origin/meaning
The Badge is based on the Arms of Johan van Galen (1604-1653), rear-Admiral of of the Amsterdam Admirality. He had a succesful career until killied in Action on 23 March 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War. The Badge was approved on 16 July 1952.
