Origin/meaning
The arms are a combination of the cross of the State of Speyer and the symbol of St. Lawrence, the local patron saint. Elchesheim was first mentioned in 1102 in a gift to the Bishop of Speyer. It belonged to Speyer until the 14th century, when it became part of Baden.
No arms or seals are known prior to the early 19th century. In the seals from the 19th century the arms showed only the grill. The arms were proposed in 1900 by the State Archives, who wanted to include the historical importance of Speyer to the arms. The new arms were adopted by the council on December 29, 1900.
