Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 12, 1876 and again on September 16, 1981.

The old arms are identical to the arms of the Van de Werve family.

In the late 17th century the Van de Werve family acquired the Schilde estate. The local council started to use the family arms as arms of the village in the 18th century. Even though these were not granted, the village used the complete arms of the Van de Werve family, including supporters and crown (see also Lichtaart and Vorselaar)

In the new arms an escutcheon with the arms of 's Gravenwezel was added.

Literature: Servais, 1955; Anonymous : Van evers en heiligen - wapens en vlaggen van de gemeenten in de provincie Antwerpen. Antwerpen, 1998.
