===Origin/meaning===
The arms were granted in 1937 and are based on the old seals of the city. The beaver's head is canting (Beaver=Bever in the local dialect, or Biber in German). The beaver already appeared on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from the 15<sup>th</sup> century.

The arms have not changed since, except for the colours of the beaver, which has often been shown in proper colours, as shown below by [[Otto Hupp|Hupp]] in the 1920s.
