Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on August 19, 1926 and again on September 9, 1990.
The arms show the symbols of the local patron saint of the city since the 9th century, St. Quirinus. Quirinus was a martyr and in 875 his relics were transfered to the abbey in Malmedy. According to legend he killed a dragon, hence the dragon on the arms. The mitre, sword and crosier are the symbols of the Malmedy Abbey in which his relics are kept.
