Neuenburg was a free Imperial city from 1219-1250 and again from 1274. In 1331 it was sold to Austria and remained Austrian until 1806, when the city became part of Baden.

The oldest known seal dates from 1261 and already shows the bend. The oldest known sources show the arms as above, but in the 19<sup>th</sup> century the opposite colours were often used. In the 19<sup>th</sup> century often two lions were used as supporters, but these were not granted in 1973 when the arms were officially granted.
