Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 16, 1986.
The chief shows the purple cross of the Order of Santiago, which played an important role in the local history. The wheel and the bunch of grapes refer to the industry and agriculture in the region.
The bases shows a local type of ship on the Tagus river. I have no idea about the meaning of the rope.
The previous arms were granted on April 24, 1940 and only differ in the crown:
Freguesias in Barreiro:
- Alto do Seixalinho
- Barreiro (freguesia)
- Coina
- Lavradio
- Palhais (Barreiro)
- Santo André (Barreiro)
- Santo António da Charneca
- Verderena
