EKEREN
Province : Antwerpen
Incorporated into : 1982 Antwerpen
Official blazon
- (1819) Van lazuur met drie gouden ketels.
- (1841) Een blauw veld met dry gulden brouwerstobben.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on October 6, 1819 and confirmed on December 27, 1841.
The arms show three brewing pots. The origin of the arms is not quite clear, but the arms are first mentioned in 1627. It is possible that the arms originally showed canting acorns or brewing kettles, from the word akers, which may have both meanings. Historically there have been many breweries in Ekeren. (The name, however, seems to be derived from the old name of the local river, Akerna)
The arms were officially granted in 1819 in the Dutch national colours. Belgium was at the time part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and all arms which were applied for, but where the original colours were not known or mentioned, were granted in the blue and gold national colours. After the Belgian independence, the arms were confirmed.
