Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1819 and again on December 9, 1841.
The chevron in the arms is taken from the arms of Godfried Hermans, 24th Abbot of the Tongerlo Abbey, who died in 1794. The village of Essen was a possession of the Abbey from 1159-1794. The crosier and mitre also refer to the Abbey.
The oxen-heads and sheep are symbols of agriculture and also symbolise strength and patience.
