The town was founded as a German town and its original name is "Landeshut" meaning the country's guard (the Polish name means "stony hill"), which makes the arms canting; a knight defending the town. The image already appeared on the 14<sup>th</sup> century seal of the city. Later seals and images differ widely, as can be seen on the images below, but the composition remained the same.
