The chief, with the word LABOR (work) in it, means that it was because of all the work from it's "Unhas Negras" (Black Fingernails, workers' dirty hands from working hard) that São João da Madeira developed and became an modern town.

The red factory records the industrial and developer spirit of the people of São João da Madeira; the garb points to the agricultural base (background) and the living habits of the people natural to São João da Madeira.
