The anchors have multiple meanings.  An anchor is part of the arms of the city of [[Ludwigshafen]], where he was born. The colours silver and blue are those of the [[Diocese of Speyer]], as he became a priest in that diocese. The anchor is also the symbol of hope, and are also symbolising the foundation of the faith in heaven and earth. The anchor is also mentioned in his motto, which means "Hope is an anchor for the soul".
