Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The three scallops refer to St. James, the patron saint of the bishop. The garland in chief is a canting symbol. Colors of the shield are blue for Mary, the mother of Jesus, and red for martyrdom, the fate of St. James.
The staff behind the shield is shaped like an Irish Cross, symbolising his Irish ancestry.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
