Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on February 16, 1847 and again on July 7, 1964.
The oldest seals of the village date from 1286, 1332 and 1407 and show the local patron saint, St. Martin, with a fish and a star. In 1502 the seal of the city showed a lion with an anchor and star. The whole placed in a quadrilobe with an angel, two fish and the flint of Burgundy. The colours are known from a 16th century book. The arms were thus based on the seal, and in 1847 granted without the quadrilobe (see image below), which was corrected in 1964.
