Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on August 29, 1842 and again on February 16, 1993.
The arms show in an escutcheon the lion of Vlaanderen, surrounded by a canting symbol (compare also Kaprijke) and are first mentioned in the 18th century. An older 15th century version of the arms showed 10 acorns around the escutcheon, later to be replaced by the oak branches. Both are canting, Eeklo means 'open place in an oak forest'.
