Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 7, 1496 and changed in September 1517.
Stříbro (then Mies) was mentioned as a city in 1266, but probably was granted city rights earlier, as the oldest known seal dates from around 1260.
The arms are similar to many others in (then) Bohemia, a city wall with a gate and in between the towers and in the gate symbols for the local rulers. Here the Bohemian lion between the towers and a fleur-de-lys in the gate. The fleur-de-lys already appeared on the seal on a charter from 1342, but the seal probably dates from around 1260. The fleur-de-lys probably is a symbol for St. Mary, the original 13th century patron saint of the city.
The arms from 1496 are identical to the current arms, in 1517 the arms were granted in wrong colours, probably due to copying wrongly the previous grant. Later two miners as supporters were added, but their use was discontinuned by the end of the 19th century. The historical colours were largely used during the centuries, the red only rarely.
