Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1926 and show the lion of Hessen above a pair of glasses.

It has been suggested that the glasses are derived from the arms of the State of Mainz, as the area was part of Mainz. The lion as a symbol for Hessen appeared first in 1722.
